Community for Kids provides nutritional weekend food packs to food insecure students in the Blue Valley School District. Formed in 2012, they are a 501©3 nonprofit all-volunteer organization supported by local churches, businesses and individual donors.
Over 10,000 families live below the federal poverty level in the Overland Park area and more than 2,000 students in the Blue Valley School District qualify for the free or reduced-fee lunch program.
At the close of the 2017-2018 school year, Community for Kids had provided 264 weekly food pack to students in 24 schools, some 8,654 food packs in total. They also stock nurses’ offices with food to address those kids who come to school hungry. By partnering with elementary, middle and high and working with the counselors in those schools, they continue to identify students who are food insecure.
Community for Kids does not receive funding through any agencies. They collect food and monetary donations from individuals and civic organizations. 100% of all donations go directly to the purchase of food and to benefit children in local neighborhoods. Some of their costs are offset by food drives conducted by district schools, local churches, scout clubs and businesses.
If you or your organization is able to help, please contact Community for Kids. They operate an outreach program that offers opportunities to conduct food drives, participate in fundraisers (such as their Trivia Night on August 19), or for a donation of $20 per month or $144 per year, support a student in food packs for the year.
