Cancellation of 2021 event
After much consultation with the Chamber Board Executive Committee, area restaurateurs, and the Chamber’s event planning consultant, the difficult decision has been made to cancel this year’s A Taste of Leawood, originally scheduled for September 11th.
As you’ve likely seen, there are “help wanted” signs everywhere. When you dine out, you’ve likely noticed how restaurants are struggling to staff at the levels they would like. Depending on your industry, you too may be struggling to hire and retain staff, creating challenges for your business to deliver the products and services your customers expect, and that you want to deliver.
A Taste of Leawood, formerly Grazing the Trail, started in 1998 as an opportunity for the community to celebrate all the great restaurants that are a part of the Leawood Chamber. It has become the Chamber’s biggest fundraising event, allowing us to offer programs and services to our members not often seen in a chamber with a staff of our size.
This year, with all the labor shortages restaurants are facing, it has proven nearly impossible for our members to properly staff their restaurants on a Saturday night and provide staffing for their tent at A Taste of Leawood. Another challenge this year is the increased price for rentals (tents, tables, chairs, etc.) for the event. Rentals are the Chamber’s single biggest expense for the event and our pricing had increased by nearly 90%. Further, after a very difficult 2020, the Delta Variant of the Coronavirus has created a situation where some of the Chamber’s corporate sponsors have informed us that they will not be able to invite guests to the event, which is one of their main reasons for participating.
The Chamber staff, Board of Directors, and all our volunteers look forward to continuing to work together “pursuing business prosperity through innovation and collaboration.”.
