KANSAS CITYKan. — AdventHealth Shawnee Mission has named Alan Verrill, MD, its new president and chief executive officer, effective February 25.

Dr. Verrill is transitioning to AdventHealth Shawnee Mission from his role as president and CEO of AdventHealth South Overland Park, which opened in 2017 with a 24/7 emergency department, imaging, laboratory and medical office building prior to opening as a full-service hospital in 2021. During his time there, the facility was named a Top Hospital by the Leapfrog Group in 2023, highlighting its nationally recognized achievements in patient safety and quality. More than 2,100 hospitals were considered for the award. Among the 132 hospitals that were selected in categories such as general, children’s, rural and teaching hospitals, AdventHealth South Overland Park received one of 35 Top General Hospital distinctions in the country, making it the only hospital in the Kansas City metropolitan area and Johnson County, Kan., to receive the 2023 Top Hospital award.

Before joining the team at AdventHealth South Overland Park, Verrill served as the chief medical officer at AdventHealth Littleton in Colorado for five years. In addition, he is a veteran of the United States Air Force and is a licensed internal medicine physician with more than 25 years of experience in the hospital setting. Verrill earned his medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine and has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Atlantic Union College.

“With his background as a clinician, Alan is passionate about delivering high-quality, compassionate health care,” said Sam Huenergardt, regional president and chief executive officer of AdventHealth Mid-America Region. “He is a collaborator focused on building highly engaged teams built on trust and transparency. We are excited to have him join our leadership team at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission.”

“I am grateful for my time with the incredible team at AdventHealth South Overland Park,” said Verrill. “I look forward to serving in this new role and seeing our mission of whole person, compassionate care continue to grow across the Kansas City community and on our own campus with the opening of the new Cancer Institute.”

Verrill’s new role comes at an exciting time for AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, having recently celebrated some important additional milestones, including:

  • AdventHealth Shawnee Mission attained Magnet recognition again in January 2024, a testament to its continued dedication to high-quality nursing practice. The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program® distinguishes health care organizations that meet rigorous standards for nursing excellence. This credential is the highest national honor for professional nursing practice.
  • The AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Breast Center successfully passed its third reaccreditation review from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) survey. This triennial accreditation through the American College of Surgeons demonstrates the multidisciplinary commitment to excellence in breast imaging and cancer care across the United States. The NAPBC accreditation first launched nationally in 2005 and AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Breast Center was the first to achieve accreditation in the Kansas City metropolitan area in 2014.
  • AdventHealth Cancer Institute began installation of the Elekta Unity MRI Linear Accelerator, the first of its kind in Kansas City. The leading-edge technology offers the latest cancer-fighting technology, using MRI-Guided Radiation Therapy to pinpoint tumors and avoid healthy tissue. The Cancer Institute is scheduled to open later this year.

Over the last decade, AdventHealth’s Mid-America Region has grown from two hospital campuses, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission in Kansas and AdventHealth Durand in Wisconsin, to include several additional care locations in Kansas, including AdventHealth Lenexa, AdventHealth South Overland Park, AdventHealth Ottawa, AdventHealth College Boulevard and a future campus in Lenexa City Center.

Verrill will report to Sam Huenergardt, regional president and CEO of the Mid-America Region.
