Commerce Bank celebrates its new location!

On July 31st, Commerce Bank celebrated the Grand Opening of its newest location with a Ribbon Cutting ceremony. Leawood and Overland Park City and Chamber officials were on hand to enjoy the festivities.

To add to the fun, the event included a Cash Machine showdown. Sam Glaser, an Overland Trail Elementary School Ambassador, was catching cash for the Blue Valley Education Foundation, and his opponent was Teresa Stohs, who was catching cash for the Arts & Recreation Foundation of Overland Park. Both took their turns in the cash machine! It was a very close competition, but Commerce ended up donating $500 to each organization.

Congratulations to Commerce Bank and best wishes for their continued success in the community!

“Socks in September”

A concept that began with a small idea grows into a huge success. Shawna Davidson, owner of Davidson Promotional Products, with the help of many individuals, local churches, schools, area businesses and national companies has collected over 10,000 pairs of new socks for people of all ages in the Kansas City and surrounding areas.

Original goals were set at 500 pairs the first year of this community service project. Nearly 6,000 pairs were donated that year. What a wonderful surprise!

This September marks the 3rd year for this event with hopes of record donations. The local organizations that receive the socks are all in great need of one of our most basic necessities. For some, new socks are a rare comfort. Imagine a winter without warm, dry socks!

To learn more about “Socks in September” or for a sock pickup at your location, contact Davidson Promotional Products at 913-947-7000. The Leawood Chamber of Commerce office will also be a "Socks in September" drop off site, so feel free to drop your donation off at the Chamber.

Patriots Run 2008

The Patriots’ Run Race Committee is pleased to inform you about our 6th annual Patriots’ Run. This run takes place every year on 9/11. Why? To remember not only those victims who were lost, but also those soldiers, police officers, firefighters and others who served this country both on that day and every day thereafter. In this way, we honor all the people who work to insure that this tragedy never repeats itself.

Each year the event has grown, and it's evolved into a truly unique community and worldwide event. Last year we had 175 runners from 40 states and 63 runners in Iraq. Making this event successful this year and in the future can only be accomplished with the generosity of the community. In the past, the Patriots’ Run has witnessed military wives pushing young ones in strollers, participants running in tribute to loved ones lost on 9/11 and community members that enjoy running. It is truly amazing what one person can witness in 9 hours and 11 minutes at the Patriots’ Run.

Members of the community and the Chamber have the opportunity to help in the following ways:

• Be a participant in the 2008 Patriots Run

• Volunteer your time to help ensure the Patriots’ Race is a success

• Be a Patriots’ Run Race Sponsor or make a monetary or in-kind donation to the Patriots’ Run

If you have any questions about the organization, volunteering or donations, please feel free to contac ... (go to www.leawoodchamber.org for more information)

Retirement community offers students after-school jobs, college scholarships

Tallgrass Creek retirement community in Overland Park is looking for high school students to work part-time in its on-site restaurants. The community offers student workers college scholarships, and was named among the best places to work in Kansas City by the Kansas City Business Journal. Its management company is one of FORTUNE’s Top 100 “2008 Best Companies to Work For®.” “We’re looking to hire students from all the Blue Valley public schools, the Olathe school district, the most southern Shawnee Mission public schools, and churches and private schools within a five- or ten-mile radius of the campus,” says Shelli Giardino, senior human resources manager. Giardino says the community is currently looking to fill approximately 20 positions for servers and utility workers to staff Tallgrass Creek’s two on-site restaurants – Blue Sky, a traditional restaurant with seated table service, and the more casual Sunflower Bistro.

The Tallgrass Creek scholarship program offers student workers the opportunity to receive money for college – up to $500 per semester for up to eight semesters. To qualify to receive the scholarship, students must work at Tallgrass Creek for a total of at least 1,000 hours over a consecutive two-year period. They must also have an exemplary work record, good grades, and plans for attending an accredited college or trade school on a full-time basis after they graduate from high school.
