The Leawood Chamber of Commerce and the Johnson County Public Policy Council will sponsor the Legislative Breakfast Series to enhance the communication and exchange of information between the business community and the Johnson County state legislative delegation. Legislators will be on hand to discuss issues and offer the most current legislative updates.

Representatives Jim Denning, Owen Donohoe, Kelly Meigs amd Ron Worley

Speaker Schedule to be announced, and is subject to change.

All meetings will be held at the Ritz Charles Overland Park, 9000 West 137th Street, and casual attire is requested. Breakfast will be served promptly at 7:30 a.m.

The Johnson County Public Policy Council and the Chairman of the Board of Johnson County Commissioners, Ed Eilert, cordially invite you to attend the 2011 State of the County Address and Luncheon on March 29th, 2011.

Check-in on March 29th will begin at 11:30 am, followed by lunch at noon and Chairman Eilert's Address at 12:30 pm.

The Leawood Stage Company is pleased to present a script-in-hand dramatic reading of Down on Memminger by playwright Kirby Fields in the Oak Room on the lower level of Leawood City Hall, 4800 Town Center Drive. Three free performances will be held on Friday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m. and a Sunday matinee will begin at 2:00 pm.

Down on Memminger is the story of a young man’s interaction with his family and former girlfriend as he deals with uncontrollable pain resulting from a lifelong physical aliment. Directed by Petra Allen, Down on Memminger features actors Paul Anderson, Whitney Beiler, Irene Blend and Michael Bunn. LSC will host a unique opportunity for audiences to meet playwright, Kirby Fields. Following each performance the audience will interact with the playwright in a question and answer period.

Discover how Fields was inspired to write the play and about his process. Kirby Fields received his MFA in Playwriting from Carnegie Mellon University. Playwrighting Workshop by playwright Kirby Fields

The Leawood Stage Company is pleased to present a free workshop on Playwriting in the Oak Room of the Community Center, lower level of Leawood City Hall, 4800 Town Center Drive beginning at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 2nd. The workshop will be presented by New York City based playwright, Kirby Fields. He will take participants through a discussion of a play’s structure and apply it to a number of examples. Writers should leave with an idea for a short play of their own.

Kirby Fields received his MFA in Playwriting from Carnegie Mellon University. His plays were developed as part of the Kettle of Inspiration Reading Series, the Michigan Theater Festival, the F.A.C.T. Words & Wine Series and Beginnings at Happy Ending. Fields’ play Flood was featured in the 2010 Samuel French Off Broadway Short Play Festival and another play was accepted at the upcoming NY 15-Minute Play Festival. He is a founding member of the 61A writers group and a regular contributor to PopMatters.com.

Kansas Legislative Update 03-18-2011

Legislative Report for the Leawood Chamber of Commerce

This week the legislature was very active – especially on budgets and taxes.  Here’s what’s new:
 
Appropriating committees in both Houses worked this week on a budget for the 2012 fiscal year.  Given the inability of the Senate and House to come together on 2011 reductions, it may take a long time to produce the final 2012 budget. Senate Ways and Means has assembled their version (SB234) and passed it out of committee.  House Appropriations was still assembling HB2383, and will return to it next week. The Senate 2012 budget bill included the same appropriation for 2011 to cover the $21.5 million shortfall in special education matching dollars and the same reductions to fund it, as was in its version of FY 2011 reductions in the failed conference committee. The House has already passed HB2374 on this issue, again taking the position that this shortfall must come from deeper cuts to general state aid to schools than the Governor recommended.

House Tax Committee on Monday and Tuesday held hearings on HB2381, which makes the 2010 sales tax increase permanent and dedicates all future revenue growth to reductions in individual and corporate income tax rates.  The State Chamber and NFIB were proponents.  Thinking the Senate leadership might ju ...
