The Johnson County Public Policy Council, which is comprised of nine Johnson County area chambers and the Greater KC Chamber of Commerce, sponsors the annual Legislative Breakfast Series to enhance the communication and exchange of information between the business community and the Johnson County state legislative delegation. Legislators will offer legislative updates and discuss issues. Breakfast is served promptly at 7:30 a.m. Casual attire is recommended.

The Leawood Arts Council will host a free concert Sunday, February 14th by the Cantilena String Quartet beginning at 2:00 pm. The concert will be held in the Oak Room of Leawood City Hall, 4800 Town Center Drive. Enter the Community Center through the north doors on the lower level of City Hall.
Cantilena String Quartet is a professional performance group based in Kansas City. Members of the quartet include Yu-Fang Chen, Shih-Chieh Chen, Yu-Fen Chen, Kathryn Cheng. They are all currently students of the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance. Individually they hold impressive resumes of award winning careers in music.
The Cantilena String Quartet will perform a wide variety of styles from their vast repertoire.

Economic Development
Hearings were held Thursday morning in House Taxation Committee on amendments to HB2538, amendments to the Promoting Employment Across Kansas Act (“PEAK”) passed just last year. The credits would expand to company business units that have been acquired by a qualified employer outside the state of Kansas that intends to retain jobs within the state as well as redefining the salary range of jobs to those about the county median wage instead of the county average wage. Qualifying employers get to keep for several years the state income withholding taxes of qualified employee jobs created or retained. There seems to be quite a bit of enthusiasm for the bill but of course it does contain a negative fiscal note in a year where that could be all it takes to stop it.

Senate Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jay Emler announced to his committee this week that his personal target is to find another $100 million in cuts from the Governor’s FY2011 budget and that he intended to exempt K-12 education, public safety and higher education to find a 2.5% reduction in all other state general fund agencies. Rory O’Connor has been named 2010 Chairman of the Board of The Builders’ Association. He has been a member of the Association’s Executive Board since 2006. He succeeds James O. Delaney, Vice President of Operations of Turner Construction Company, who remains an officer of the Association.
Mr. O’Connor is Vice President of Construction of OnGoal, LLC, owner of the Kansas City Wizards professional soccer team. The company’s projects include construction of a stadium for the Wizards in Wyandotte County and development of 500 acres at the old Bannister Mall site. He has an M.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

Located in Johnson County, SAFEHOME has served victims of domestic violence for 30 years. SAFEHOME has grown from a network of “safe homes” in the community to a 45-bed shelter.
In addition to safe shelter, SAFEHOME also provides a 24-hour crisis hotline, counseling, child care, transitional housing, school and community education programs, Johnson County District Court and hospital advocacy, and civil legal assistance. All services are free and confidential. Each year, SAFEHOME assist over 6,500 survivors of domestic violence.
