Join us in celebrating "The Spirit of Entrepreneurship" at the 2009 Leawood Chamber Annual Meeting and Hall of Fame Awards luncheon.

This two hour event is open to the public and provides a way for the Chamber to connect with 300 area business and community leaders. Our scheduled guest speaker is Cindy Reynolds, Co-founder of Somerset Ridge Vineyard & Winery.

Long time Leawood residents, Cindy and Dennis Reynolds, co-founded Somerset Ridge Vineyard & Winery, a premium artisanal winery located in the rolling hills south of Johnson County. They planted the vineyard in 1998, and have been instrumental in the development of our area as a thriving grape-growing and winemaking hub in the Midwest.

For the last three years, Cindy served as President of Guys' Snacks Corporation, in addition to her duties as co-owner of Somerset. In her role at Guy's Snacks, she focused on building and bringing back a venerable Midwestern brand and gained product placement in thousands of retail grocery stores across the country. She found the lessons of the grocery industry to be relevant to her work at the winery. Somerset has been a growing, thriving business and their wines can be found in more than 60 retail liquor stores in Kansas City, as well as a growing list of independent restaurants. Due to its success, Cindy made the transition to working for Somerset full time.

Currently, Cindy serves as the incoming board chair of the Johnson County Library Foundation, is a member of the Junior League of Kansas City, Mo, and has held board positions with the Kansas City Museum, Children's Therapeutic Learning Center, The American Red Cross and The Family Conservancy. This year she was honored by the Kauffman Foundation as one of the 2009 Kansas City Women Who Mean Business.

Cindy Reynold's Full Bio

We will also recognize our 2009 Hall of Fame Award Recipients.

Leawood resident Nan Kanter is the director of the Blue Valley Special Olympics Program and the Program Coordinator for Special Populations at the Blue Valley Recreation Commission. She started the Special Olympics at Blue Valley Recreation 21 years ago to provide opportunities for her son Michael when he was younger. When it began in the fall of 1988, there were 10 athletes and one sport. Now the program offers 13 sports and has about 150 athletes participating in at least one sport. The Special Populations program started for those who enjoy activities other than sports.

Leawood resident Dr. James L. Spigarelli recently retired after 38 years at the Midwest Research Institute (MRI). During his first years at MRI, Dr. Spigarelli's research focused on environmental analytical sciences, with an emphasis on chemical agents, their degradation products, and agent demilitarization. He served as President and CEO since 1999, leading the company in becoming a $500 million not-for-profit scientific research institute. He also holds many leadership positions in the academic and business communities.
